Life in Odesa continues amidst the backdrop of war. Concerts are held, cafés open their doors, weddings take place, and children are born—reminders of continuity, hope, and resilience. At the same time, the city bears witness to the conflict: remnants of destroyed Russian military equipment are displayed on one of Odesa’s main squares, a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle.

This section captures the coexistence of ordinary life and extraordinary circumstances, showing how residents adapt, celebrate, mourn, and persevere. It is a record of a city that refuses to pause, even under sustained military threat.

Водночас місто береже пам’ять про боротьбу: залишки знищеної російської техніки, виставлені на одній із головних площ, слугують суворим свідченням тривалої війни.

Despite the war, sport continues to play a vital role in everyday life in Odesa. In a city marked by air-raid sirens and uncertainty, training sessions, competitions, and informal gatherings around sport offer a rare sense of normality, resilience, and collective purpose.

Throughout the year — in both winter and summer — running competitions take place, alongside boxing events, a discipline deeply rooted in Ukrainian sporting culture. What is striking is the simultaneity of these efforts: multiple sports unfolding in parallel, across different venues, sustained by coaches, volunteers, and local communities. Sport in Odesa has not paused — it has adapted. Training continues even when competitions must be held without spectators, and teams persist despite disrupted schedules and limited resources.

Odesa’s strong football tradition, encompassing both men’s and women’s teams, remains a source of pride. Although matches sometimes take place behind closed doors, commitment to training and competition endures. In these persistent routines lies a powerful statement: that life, discipline, and aspiration continue, even in the shadow of war.

Попри війну, спорт залишається невід’ємною частиною життя Одеси. У місті, де панують повітряні тривоги та постійна невизначеність, тренування й змагання дарують рідкісне відчуття стабільності, незламності та спільної мети.

Протягом усього року — і взимку, і влітку — в Одесі проходять забіги та боксерські турніри, адже бокс глибоко вкорінений у місцеву спортивну культуру. Вражає те, як різні дисципліни розвиваються паралельно завдяки зусиллям тренерів, волонтерів і громад. Спорт в Одесі не зупинився — він адаптувався. Тренування тривають, навіть якщо змагання доводиться проводити без глядачів, а команди працюють попри збиті графіки та обмежені ресурси.

Футбольні традиції міста — як у чоловічому, так і в жіночому футболі — залишаються особливим приводом для гордості. Хоча матчі іноді проходять за зачиненими дверима, відданість грі не слабшає. У цій наполегливості — потужне свідчення того, що дисципліна та прагнення до розвитку сильніші за тінь війни.

Курорт Куяльник / Kuyalnik

Куяльник здавна був місцем оздоровлення та спокою. У радянський період він функціонував як популярна оздоровниця, куди приїжджали з Одеси та всього регіону заради лікування та відновлення сил.

Розташований лише за двадцять хвилин від центру міста, Куяльницький лиман відомий своєю ропою та лікувальними грязями, які вважаються цілющими. Санаторій продовжує працювати й сьогодні, проте місце набуло і нового, більш неформального значення. Влітку люди приходять сюди надвечір, щоб зануритися у теплу солону воду, зустрітися з друзями, піти на побачення або просто побути разом далеко від міського гамору.

У 2025 році цьому особливому простору було присвячено фільм «Sanatorium». Він пропонує тихий, інтимний портрет Куяльника — водночас як бальнеологічного курорту та унікального соціального ландшафту, сформованого пам’яттю, звичками й тривалістю традицій.

Kuyalnik has long been a place of healing and retreat. During the Soviet period, it functioned as a fully developed sanatorium, drawing visitors from Odesa and across the region who came for treatment, rest, and recovery.

Located just twenty minutes from the city centre, the Kuyalnik estuary is defined by its salt lake and mineral-rich waters, believed to have therapeutic properties. While the sanatorium still operates today, the site has also taken on a more informal role: in summer, people come in the evenings to wade into the warm, salty water, to meet friends, to go on dates, or simply to spend time together.

In 2025, this distinctive space and its atmosphere were captured in the film Sanatorium, offering a quiet, intimate portrait of Kuyalnik as both a health resort and a social landscape shaped by memory, habit, and continuity.
